Canadian Fishing
Baffin, Texas

Some of you may know that I had a friend coming down from Canada and I wanted to put him onto some fish. The goal was to put him on a redfish with his fly rod. Frank is an avid fly fisher but not in the salt. Here is where my part comes in. I told him if he ever came down again that I will put him onto some fish. I hadn't heard of any reports coming from my honey holes and I was getting worried. As I went to pick him up from his hotel on the first day we were met with a big thunderstorm. As we made our way down south the weather did not get any better. Upon arriving in Kingsville I decided to head to the back of Baffin on our yaks. I have caught fish here no mater the weather but the fish are there or their not. It was going to be hit or miss type of thing. Well my first choice was a miss. Lots of bait but not anything chasing them. Here is a picture of Frank on a yak for the first time. I guess with a Cobra Kayak you do not have to be an EXPERT to have a good time.

Just couldn't resist posting this picture.

We fished hard that first day without any success. The pressure is now on! The second day I decided to hook up my boat and fish Baffin. We head to one of my favorite places and I see bait and birds working the shoreline. Before we make it to shore we see redfish busting up bait in about 3" of water. What a rush. Frank and I make our way to shore and Frank yells I I see one coming. Sure enough it was. I instruct him where to cast and when to strip the line and Frank was hooked up. Fighting the fish like a professional he lands hive very first redfish on the fly. Nice catch Frank! Frank with his 23 1/2" red.

The release!

As soon as Frank released his fish I turned around hooked up to a 24" redfish myself. The day kept getting windier and windier and the sun just went away. We headed to another shallow spot when visibility was less than an inch. But when the whole fish is out of the water it is not hard to see them. The only thing was that they were very spooky. I did mange to catch my third fish for the day and first limit on the fly for the year.

We fish until dark then we treated ourselves at the world famous King's Inn. On the third day we went back to the spot and had the same miserable conditions. Windy and overcast are just the best when you are trying to sight cast a red on the fly. NOT! We fished hard all day but Frank just could not keep the fish on his line. I believe he lost 3 after a brief fight. At least he did not get skunked for the trip. Canada is a long way to come from to get SKUNKED! I did manage to catch my second limit on the fly for the year. Frank and I with our catch!

In all it was a great trip. Here are the fish we caught. All fat and from 23 to 26 1/2". BEFORE

AFTER

Most of you know that I release almost everything I catch but these looked so yummy!
